MOSCOW, July 20 (UPI) -- Russians are sweltering and dying in what is turning into their country's hottest summer in 130 years, officials say.

ITAR-Tass reported Tuesday Moscow recorded a record high of 95.4 degrees Fahrenheit Monday with forecasters predicting temperatures to rise above 100 by the weekend. The heat's been on for nearly a month and is expected to stick around through at least the end of July, the Russian news agency said.

Muscovites' misery multiplied Monday with smoke drifting in from burning peat bogs in the region making breathing more difficult.
